Dr. Sophia Leung

Dr. Sophia Leung

President

Dr. Sophia Leung is a residency-trained and fellowship-trained optometrist with a clinical emphasis in cornea, advanced glaucoma, and anterior segment disease. She is currently practicing at a surgical referral center in Calgary, Alberta where she performs surgical triage, secondary and tertiary medical management, and surgical co-management alongside ophthalmologists of various subspecialties.
Dr. Leung is a 2014 University of Waterloo School of Optometry alumni, completed an Ocular Disease and Refractive Surgery Residency, and an Advanced Glaucoma and Cornea Fellowship with Oklahoma Medical Eye Group (affiliated with NSUOCO) in 2019-2021. Dr. Leung has been a council member of the Alberta Association of Optometrists since 2015. Dr. Leung is a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, Diplomate of the American Academy of Optometry in the Anterior Segment Section, Fellow of the Canadian College of Specialties in Optometry, and an adjunct faculty member for NSUOCO and University of Waterloo School of Optometry.

Dr. Cristy Franco

Dr. Cristy Franco

Dr. Cristy Franco was born and raised in Calgary, and after graduating from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 2016, she was excited to return home to practice. She joined Airdrie Family Eye Doctors where she provides comprehensive primary eye care and leads a neuro-optometric vision therapy clinic with a clinical emphasis on pediatric, learning-related, and concussion therapy. She continues to be involved in international eye care, with past trips to Romania, Moldova, Mexico, and Guatemala.
Dr. Franco is involved with teaching and education locally within her community and as a conference speaker. She strongly values collaboration with other health care providers for best patient care. When not in clinic, she is learning Spanish, enjoys all things plant-related, traveling, and spending time with her husband and their dog.
Dr. Franco joined the Alberta Association of Optometrists Council in 2020, serving as President-Elect since 2024. 

Dr. Andrea Lasby

Past President

Dr. Lasby graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science in 2013. She went on to complete a Cornea and Contact Lens Residency at Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry in 2014. She is currently a partner at Mission Eye Care, Centre for Cornea and Contact Lens, in Calgary. Since 2023, she has served as the program coordinator for Mission Eye Care’s Cornea and Contact Lens Residency, affiliated with NSUOCO.
 
Dr. Lasby is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, the Scleral Lens Society, and the Canadian College of Specialties in Optometry. She served as President of the Calgary Society of Optometrists from 2016 to 2018 and has been teaching medical students and family medicine residents at the University of Calgary about the role and value of optometry since 2014. She has been a member of the Alberta Association of Optometry Council since 2018 and served as President from 2022 to 2024.

Dr. Monica Bell

Council Member

Dr. Monica Bell, born and raised in Calgary, attended the University of Alberta for her Bachelor of Science before graduating with honours from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. She currently practices in both Calgary and High River. 
In school, Monica was an active participant in student organizations with her role as president of the Lions Club, Social Affairs Director of the Canadian Association of Optometry Students. Currently, she maintains the role of Past President of the Calgary Society of Optometrists and is serving her fifth term as AAO council member and fourth year as continuing education committee chair. 
Monica is passionate about helping others and has participated in numerous vision care clinics globally to provide eye care and establish sustainable clinics and training to local optometrists. Outside of optometry, Monica loves to stay active, enjoys traveling and spending time in the mountains.

Dr. Pamela Giles

Dr. Pamela Giles

Council Member

Dr. Pamela Giles, born and raised in Grande Prairie, graduated with honors from the University of Waterloo in 2005. She has worked throughout Northern Alberta, and practices full scope optometry in rural settings. She, along with 2 partner ODs, started Aurora Eye Care in 2013 and
now own private practice clinics in Grande Prairie, Edson, and Jasper. Her passions include patient health advocacy, a critical role in resource limited rural communities. Pamela and her husband, Ryan, have a great time hiking, skiing, cooking, and traveling with their three children, Emily, Brady, and Josh. She also has an interest in art, taking a variety of courses in oil and watercolor painting.

Dr. Darren Wagner

Dr. Darren Wagner

Council Member

Dr. Darren Wagner was born in Spirit River, Alberta, and studied Biochemistry at Grande Prairie Regional College, and the University of Alberta before graduating with Honours from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 2006. Darren has previously volunteered on an eye mission in Guatemala, and has completed a disease externship in Baltimore, Maryland. He is married to Dr. Dallas Wagner, and they own a practice in Brooks, Alberta. He strives to increase public education of eye health in his community by speaking at schools, diabetes expos, and with local physician groups. Darren has a young family, and together they swim, bike, run, curl, windsurf, and sail, in beautiful Southeastern Alberta.

Dr. Karen Hayward

Dr. Karen Hayward was born and raised in Port-au-Port, Newfoundland. She moved to Nova Scotia and completed her Bachelor of Science in 1998 at Saint Mary’s University before continuing her studies at the University of Missouri St. Louis, where she earned her Doctor of Optometry in 2002. She also completed an Oral Therapeutics, Glaucoma and Advanced Diagnostic course from the Northeastern State University College of Optometry in 2014.
Dr. Hayward practices at the FYidoctors - St. Albert Centre location, where she passionately works to provide excellent patient care and always ensures her patients and eye care needs are met above and beyond expectation.
Dr. Hayward is currently serving on the Board of Directors for FYidoctors, and is past Chair of the FYidoctors Advisory Committee. She was also Chair of the Enhancing Life Foundation from 2014- 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed her role in leading the charitable arm of FYidoctors.
Dr. Hayward is now also serving as a council board member for the Alberta Association of Optometrists.

Dr. Alia Cappellani

Council Member

Dr. Alia Cappellani is a residency-trained optometrist with a clinical emphasis in cornea, dry eye, anterior segment disease and specialty contact lenses. She currently practices at Orbit Eye Centre where she performs surgical co-management alongside the ophthalmology team of various subspecialties and Mission Eye Care for primary eye care, specialty contact lenses, dry eye and myopia management.

Dr. Cappellani earned her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo and completed a cornea and contact lens residency at the NSU Oklahoma College of Optometry. She is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Optometry and the Scleral Lens Society. She serves as co-chair of the Educational Committee for the Calgary Society of Optometrists and is a member of the Indigenous Optometrists of Canada. Dr. Cappellani is an award-winning author who continues to contribute to journal publications and speaking engagements.

Dr. Troy Brady

Dr. Brady grew up in Pinawa, Manitoba and graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Optometry (Dean’s Honours List). Immediately following his graduation, he moved to Edmonton and began practicing at a full scope optometric practice, Optometrists’ Clinic Inc. He takes a special interest in ocular disease, contact lenses and family practice. He is a past-president of the Alberta Association of Optometrists, serving on the AAO Council since 2010. He is currently Alberta's representative and Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Optometrists.
Dr. Brady enjoys coaching his two daughters in their sporting activities and remains active in his own right. He is an avid golfer and still plays hockey once a week. This includes playing in the Alzheimer’s Faceoff Pro-Am hockey tournament during which he and his team have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help find a cure for dementia.
