THARP
, Dr. Bernard John Stanley 1918 to 2010 Bernie Tharp passed away
peacefully in the presence of family on Thursday, April 15 at the age of
91. Bernie left this world as steadily as he lived, meeting each day
with uncommon grace, humility and courage. He embodied the words
husband, father, grandfather and friend, and brought joy to all of those
who had the privilege to know him. Bernie was born in the Scottish
Nursing Home in Calgary to loving parents Ernest and Florence Tharp. At
the age of nine his beloved brother and lifetime friend Raymond was
born. He grew up in Scarboro, attended Sunalta School and Central High
School. After graduation he joined the Navy becoming a coder and petty
officer doing escort duty aboard Canadian corvettes in the North
Atlantic. In 1943 while stationed in Sydney, Nova Scotia he met and
married Ada Ione MacAulay to whom he was happily married for forty nine
years until her death in 1992. After the war he became a doctor of
Optometry at the University of Toronto before returning to Calgary. His
father, E.S. Tharp ran Consolidated Optical which made Bernie the second
generation in the optical business. He started his practice in the
Greyhound building prior to founding Chinook Optometric and Chinook
Optical, and spent many years on the Board of the Alberta Optometric
Association. He practiced optometry until the age of eighty five and
continued to work at Chinook Optical until he was ninety one. Bernie
believed in volunteering and served as president of the Downtown Lions
Club. In 1973 he became a member of the Rotary Club of Calgary South,
serving as president in 1982 to 1983. Bernie had a passion for horses
and was a member of the Al Azhar Mounted Patrol, Canadian Cutting Horse
Association, Alberta Quarter Horse Association, president of the Alberta
Light Horse Association, and after thirty years of service became an
Honorary Life Member of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. In 1997 he
married Jean Cowie and they enjoyed twelve happy years together. Bernie
was the adored grandfather to Anna Mandelkau Tharp, and the loving
father to Biba Tharp and Sydney (William) Pieschel. As well, he leaves
his treasured wife Jean Tharp, his only brother Raymond S. Tharp,
Melissa Tharp, Linda (Tony) Tse, Bill (Jocelyn) Tharp and Ian (Alana)
Tharp, and his stepdaughters Susan (Geoff) Stanbury and Judi (John)
